Pete and Mel are two of the coolest, most adventurous and passionate people I’ve ever met. They travel a lot together so it was pretty fitting that their wedding day felt like an adventure exploring Halifax and the Dartmouth waterfront with their friends and family. Saying their vows with the setting sun and Halifax skyline in the background was pretty incredible. Right after the ceremony everyone hopped on the ferry for a sunset singalong while heading back to Halifax for food and drinks at East of Grafton. It was definitely something I’ve never experienced at any wedding before and it was my absolute favourite part of the day (with many close seconds).
How did you meet?
Pete and I met at an “orphan Easter” potluck party, put together by our friend Alaina, who worked with my best friend Heather, and who is married to Pete’s best friend. Despite the fact that neither of us were living in Petawawa, we both found ourselves at this gathering and unable to stop talking to one another. Even when others tried to interrupt the conversation, we kept finding our way back to each other.
How long have you been together?
We met in March 2013.
Who proposed? How did it happen?
Pete proposed over Christmas holidays in Nova Scotia, at one of the harbour look-offs I had taken him to during his first visit, years before. Pete romantically recounts that our first trip to this point was one of the first moments he knew he loved me. So, he brought us back to this point, by surprise I might add, to ask me to spend my life with him. Given my love for stories, he annotated our relationship and the proposal in storybook form, pictures and all.
After struggling to even read this amazing story because I was crying too hard, Pete nearly fell off the cliff as he got down on one knee.
What’s your favourite thing about her?
Pete says his favourite thing about me is the fact that we are such great partners, in so many ways. We are partners in crime, adventure buddies, and life navigators. He says that I taught him how to truly love someone.
What’s your favourite thing about him?
My favourite thing about Pete is that he always has my back. He is my person. On top of always being there for me and encouraging me to be my best self, he is so funny and always manages to make me laugh in the middle of a mouthful of wine.
Describe your relationship in three words:
Partners in Crime
What was your favourite part of your wedding day?
All of it. No joke, it was the best day of our lives. From singing in the sun on the ferry, dancing to an East Coast band until we could not walk, to drinking until 3am surrounded by only our closest friends and family, IT WAS PERFECT.
What are you looking forward to now that the wedding is over?
Life. Adventures. Our next party.
